"Security forces of the Bundeswehr remained in Kabul, getting ready for further evacuation flights", reads the message. The cargo planes sent from Germany could not immediately land in Kabul because a lot of Afghans seized the landing strip, wishing to leave the country.
One of the planes left to be re-fueled in Uzbekistan; the other one flew in circles over the city. In the evening, American military servicemen claimed to have cleared the landing strip, and the airport resumed working. Four А400М's are supposed to transport the evacuees to Tashkent; then, they will move on to Germany.
Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel called the latest development in Afghanistan ''extremely bitter, dramatic and horrific". She recognized that Berlin had a wrong vision of the situation, believing that the government had more time to find the way out of the situation. Now it's necessary to do everything possible to provide security of compatriots, as well as local counselors who worked with the German government and NGOs.
By Merkel's estimates, the number of German citizens in Afghanistan equals 1,500 people; the government made contacts with 600 of them.
