The candidate for the post of Federal Chancellor of Germany, Annalena Baerbock, considers it inappropriate to talk now about Ukraine's membership in NATO because of the conflict with Russia. She said this in an interview with FAZ.

"The message to Moscow should be like this: sovereign states themselves decide the issue of their alliances. This also includes the prospect of Ukraine in the EU and NATO. But you cannot take the third step before the first, and, of course, not in a situation where there is a tough conflict with Russia. I think it makes sense to support Ukraine in demining, "said Baerbock.

According to her, the most important thing now is to increase pressure on Russia in order to ensure compliance with the Minsk agreements. She also believes that it is necessary to continue negotiations with the Russian Federation.

"Stabilization is a priority now. Anyway, steps towards NATO membership are unrealistic in advance," Baerbock added.

A few days ago, against the background of the aggravation of Russia's aggression, Ukrainian Ambassador Andriy Melnyk called on Germany to provide great support to Ukraine, in particular in the context of the country's rapid accession to NATO.
