The Tbilisi City Court found ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili guilty of the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili in 2005. This is reported by "Georgia Online".
The court sentenced Saakashvili to six years of imprisonment, and also deprived him of the right to hold office for 2 years and 3 months.
The publication notes that an armed attack on Georgian MP Valery Gelashvili occurred in 2005. Former Georgian President Saakashvili is accused of exceeding his official duties with the use of violence and organizing deliberate infliction of serious harm to his health.
In the same case, former Interior Minister Ivane Merabishvili, former head of the Special Operations Department Erekle Kodua and former head of the department of the same department Gia Siradze were brought to responsibility.
Concerning Merabishvili, Kodua and Siradze, convictions have been made in this case. In particular, the court punished Ivane Merabishvili for imprisonment for 6 years and 9 months, Erekle Kodua and Giya Siradze - for a term of 9 years.
In addition, in Georgia, Saakashvili was sentenced in absentia to 3 years of imprisonment for another case - for abuse of power. It is a question of pardoning the persons detained in the murder case of Bank of Georgia employee Sandro Girgvliani.
Earlier Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president of Georgia and former governor of Odesa region was ready to become a prime minister of Ukraine or the Mayor of Odesa as Meduza reported.
‘I am ready to be a prime minister; I said about this many times’, he said.
He also specified whether he is going to run for the presidency in Ukraine and said that the main reforms should take place through the government.
‘Of course, no. I think that there should not be two persons at the helm in Ukraine at the transient state. The president should deal with the defense and foreign policy but the reforms, changes, the mental revolution should take place through the government and the parliamentarian majority’, Saakashvili emphasized.
Also, he said that Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine earlier offered him the post of the prime minister but according to Saakashvili, it was a publicity move of the president.
‘When Poroshenko offered me twice or thrice I discussed terms with him, I understood that it is for the PR, and then I will be removed from there and I will not be allowed to make any reformatory step. He did not want to change the ministers, he did not want a new parliamentarian election, he also did not want to get rid of this corruption majority in the parliament. Unlikely I would be able to reach any success with my hands tied. I experienced this in Odesa. If the prime minister does not have the ministers and the parliament it is not better than the powerless governor of Odesa’, Saakashvili noted.
Also, he said that he does not mind to become the mayor of Odesa.
‘When I change Ukraine I certainly want to move to Odesa and become its mayor. Possibly, it is the next stage of my career’, Saakashvili said.
