Head of NJSC Naftogaz-Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko claimed that the high gas prices in Europe are the consequence of the blackmail by Russia's energy giant Gazprom. The Ukrainian official said so on air of Ukraine 24 TV channel.

According to him, last year, Gazprom sent approximately 65 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe across Ukraine. This yeat, the booked amount of gas made 40 billion cubic meters, which is 1.5 times less. Thus, Russia has been blackmailing the EU to get the Nord Stream-2 pipeline certified.

"Clearly, it (Russia, - 112 International) counts on sending the difference across the Nord Stream 2. Since it is not certified for adequate reasons for now, Gazprom is blackmailing the entire Europe this way, saying that Europe is not going to get the extra volumes [of gas] if it doesn't let the Nord Stream 2 work", Vitrenko said.

At that, he added that "if the U.S. introduced respective sanctions against Nord Stream 2, that blackmail could have been avoided".
