‘By confirming its loyalty to the principles of respect of basic human rights and freedoms, which, in particular, is reflected in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Ukraine guarantees preservation and development of ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious identity of all national minorities in this country. Ukraine guarantees protection and implementation of the inseparable right for self-identification of the Crimean Tatar people within the sovereign and independent Ukrainian state. Ukraine also recognizes the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people, as the full-fledged authority of the Crimean Tatar people’, reads the message at Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry’s website.
The authority reiterated that ‘systematic pressure upon Crimean Tatars, origin-based repressions of the Ukrainian citizens, organization of ethnically and politically motivated persecutions that are imposed by the state authorities of the Russian Federation in Crimea, are the deliberate policy of ethnocide of the Crimean Tatar people’.
