Ernst Reichel, the German ambassador in Ukraine arrived in the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine, when summoned earlier today because of his statement on the alleged opportunity to hold local elections in Donbas.
The Ukrainian authority clearly stated that there will be no election on the occupied territories until there are ‘occupant forces’ of the Russian Federation, as the ministry put it.
The Ukrainian side confirmed its firm position on the issue, saying that the election would take place only after the withdrawal of the Russian Armed Forces units from Ukraine – as soon as the favorable security conditions in the region are set. The election in Donbas should be fair and democratic, taking into consideration OSCE standards and provisions of the Ukrainian law.
The Ministry said Ukraine highly appreciated Germany’s efforts to restore peace in Donbas and cease the Russian aggression against Ukraine – especially the decision-making process within the Normandy Four.
