The coordinated steps by the international community, including sanctions, are needed in order to stop the issuance of Russian passports in the territory of Donbas temporarily not controlled by Ukraine. This was stated by the speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleh Nikolenko, reports Interfax-Ukraine.
“Foreign Minister Kuleba has repeatedly stressed that the international community should react more severely to the distribution of Russian passports in Donbas. Even after its reintegration, Russia will try to play the card of Russian citizenship. In fact, this is a Russian time bomb. Coordinated steps are needed, in particular sanctions character to neutralize it, "said Nikolenko.
Thus, he reacted to the comment of the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova in connection with the statements of the President of Ukraine on granting Russian citizenship to the residents of Donbas, who indicated that "the logic and claims of Volodymyr Zelensky are difficult to understand."
Nikolenko recalled that in April 2019, Ukraine and the international community, in particular members of the UN Security Council, condemned the decision of the Russian Federation to introduce a simplified procedure for granting Russian citizenship to Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
“According to our data, over half a million local residents received Russian passports in two years,” Nikolenko added.
He said that with this step, Russia is deliberately destroying the Minsk agreements, the logic of which is to restore the sovereignty of Ukraine and the peaceful reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories.
