German mainstream politicians - German MEP, member of the subcommittee on human rights Dr. Maximilian Krah, member of the Bundestag's Foreign Policy Committee Petr Bystron, and member of the International Cooperation Committee of the Bavarian Landtag Ulrich Singer visited the Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life Party, MP of Ukraine Viktor Medvedchuk and expressed their support to him.
"We are here because Viktor Medvedchuk is a political prisoner and European Union spends a lot of money to Ukraine which is used for corruption and for war. And Viktor is the man who wants to end the war and who wants to save cheap energy and peace for Ukrainian people. And I think that it's worth to travel to Kyiv and to show everyone that we do not agree with that and that we will do what we can to stop financing a regime that has put a man like him under arrest," Maximilian Krah underlined.
The MEP, who has more than ten years of legal practice behind him, stressed that the actions against Medvedchuk are ridiculous, and this is persecution for having a different opinion.
"The European Union, and especially Germany is always asking people around to stand up for democracy and what we see here is breaking the law and it’s completely against every legal standard in the European Union. So, if Ukraine would like to reach the European Union, it shouldn’t break those laws. And for us, it’s clear that Viktor is a political prisoner and he is kind of Václav Havel of Ukraine," Petr Bystron explained.
“We have all seen in recent months how difficult the self-isolation is, and it is even worse when a person lives in isolation for several months. This is very bad and we hope that there will be a dialogue between the EU, Germany and Ukraine to resolve this issue,” Ulrich Singer noted.
The opposition politician thanked his German colleagues took the time to visit him today, taking into account the conditions and the situation in which he is in.
"The colleagues from Germany were, first of all, interested not only in the political, economic situation in the country, but they were also interested today in the situation in Donbas, whether a peaceful settlement is a prerogative of the current government and what needs to be done to fulfill the Minsk agreements so that peace is established in the territory of Donbas. We spoke today about the economic and political situation. Unfortunately, both an economic and an extremely political crisis is taking place шn our countrytoday. The culprit is the current government, which, in my opinion, is unsuitable due to lack of professionalism, and is professionally unprepared to govern the country,” Viktor Medvedchuk believes.
Viktor Medvedchuk explained to German politicians that what is happening in Ukraine, unfortunately, does not inspire hope that the country's leadership - Zelensky and his team - have the political will to establish peace.
"Of course, we talked about the economy, about the energy crisis, which, unfortunately, is present in Ukraine today, and about many other problems, including the violation of Constitutional rights, actions against freedom of speech, closures of television channels, repression and sanctions against citizens of Ukraine and Ukrainian legal entities, which is illegal and unconstitutional, extrajudicial reprisals against those who disagree with those who today defend a different point of view, which is unacceptable for one reason or another for the authorities. All this was the subject of today's very lively, fruitful and, I think, very useful discussion in order to convey all these issues to the representatives of Germany," the MP concluded.
Petr Bystron added that President Zelensky started with a big hope and big expectations but was not able to fulfill those expectations.
"President Zelensky started with a big hope and big expectations. And he was not able to fulfill those expectations. And Viktor Medvedchuk said very right that Ukrainian government should be serving the Ukrainian people. Not the European Union, not the United States, but the Ukrainian people. And what the Ukrainian people want especially in Luhansk and the other regions? It’s peace. It’s peace for Ukraine, peace for the whole region. And that is what the government do," German politician stressed.
In September, member of NATO PA and member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Joël Guerriau and member of French Senate, member of the commission of Foreign Affairs and Defense Forces Nathalie Goulet arrived in Kyiv. They visited Viktor Medvedchuk who remains in house arrest, and met with him and Vadym Rabinovych, the co-head of Opposition Platform - For Life party. Member of the commission of Foreign Affairs and Defense Forces Nathalie Goulet reiterated that the French delegation was about to return to their country with quite clear and solid roadmap in regard to Ukraine.
On February 20, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on sanctions against 8 individuals and 19 legal entities. Among them are three Ukrainian citizens - the politician Viktor Medvedchuk and his wife Oksana Marchenko and the common-law wife of the owner of the NewsOne, ZIK, and 112 Ukraine channels, Taras Kozak, Natalya Lavreniuk.
On May 13, Kyiv court chose the restriction measure for Viktor Medvedchuk, the opposition MP and Chairman of the Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party. On July 9, the court extended the house arrest of Viktor Medvedchuk until September 7. The lawyers of the politician stated about the recusal of the judge Serhiy Vovk right after the end of the court session. However, the court declined the appeal on recusal of the judge and prosecutor. On July 30, the Kyiv Court of Appeal refused to satisfy the appeal op the lawyers of Chairman of the Political Council of the Opposition Platform - For Life Viktor Medvedchuk against the extension of the politician's house arrest until September 7.
The Opposition Platform - For Life responded to this legal arbitrariness, stressing that the political persecution of MP Taras Kozak has only one purpose: reprisals against independent media, 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK TV channels, and the destruction of freedom of speech in Ukraine.
Commenting on the situation, Viktor Medvedchuk emphasized that his lawyers were fully prepared to appeal against the measure of restraint and they have evidence that refutes the prosecution's accusation and prove the illegality of applying house arrest to him.
Thus, the defense filed an appeal against the decision of the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv on extension of the measure of restraint for the politician. However, on July 30, the Kyiv Court of Appeal denied it, despite the defeat of all the arguments of the prosecution.
Over the past four months, the world media, European politicians, and experts have published more than 115,000 materials on the persecution of the opposition and independent TV channels by the Ukrainian authorities.
