The European Parliament urged the EU to stop the EU membership negotiations with Turkey. Over 500 MEPs supported the decision, which means the respective recommendation for the EU executive authorities.
MEPs assume the talks should be over as soon as Turkey fully implements constitutional amendments concerning authority of the president; that will largely increase power of the country's incumbent leader, Recep Erdogan.
Brussels has for a long time accused Erdogan of oppressing the opposition and using other authoritarian methods in ruling the country. Turkey described the MEPs’ voting as ‘a horrible mistake’.
