The European Commission wants 70 percent of the EU's adult population to get vaccinated within the next few months. DW reported that, citing top officials.
"Our goal is to vaccinate 70 percent of the adult population before the summer. This can become the turning point in our combat with the virus", said President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
At the same point, the European Commission warns people that there are three new, especially contagious kinds of coronavirus.
"If we fail to act decisively, we won't be able to cut the risk of third, perhaps even tougher wave of infection", said European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides.
By the officials' estimate, the current deficit of the vaccine in Europe is to be beaten; by March, 80 percent of people aged above 80, and 80 percent of medical staff are supposed to be inoculated.
As of January 19, some 400,000 people died of complications caused by Covid-19. On Thursday, EU leaders are supposed to hold a video conference to discuss the speed up of the vaccination campaign, as well as the introduction of the unified passport of vaccinations. The European Commission insists on the introduction of the unified certificate of vaccinations by the end of January.
