The European Commission considers introducing regular border checks inside the EU. Dimitris Avramopoulos, the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship said that in his interview with Passauer Neue Presse, as quoted by DW.

‘Security of Europeans should be of priority, and the European commission considers changing the current rules in accordance with the new situation here… We should make the difference between the internal European checks, tied to the migration crisis in 2015 and 2016, from those to be implemented for security reasons,’ he said.

Border checks were implemented in certain EU countries in September 2015, amidst the active migration crisis in the EU.

Currently, the border control can only be performed under a special permission, since systematic checks in the Schengen area are forbidden.
