The European Union reacted to the detention of ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili after his return to Georgia. Radio Liberty correspondent Rikard Jozwiak reported this on his Twitter page.

"Following the return of former Georgian President Saakashvili to #Georgia and his subsequent arrest, the EU calls on both the authorities and the opposition in Georgia to act with restraint and respect the rule of law,” Jozwiak wrote.

"Following the return of former Georgian President Saakashvili to #Georgia and his subsequent arrest, the EU calls on both the authorities and the opposition in Georgia to act with restraint and respect the rule of law. Fundamental rights and due legal process need to be respected, with transparent and fair judicial rulings, in line with the rule of law. All sides have a responsibility to engage in de-escalatory efforts,” Jozwiak wrote.

"An inclusive parliamentary process, political stability and a judiciary that enjoys the trust of the Georgian citizens are prerequisites for Georgia to deepen its partnership with the EU in line with the Association." he added.

Earlier, on October 1, Georgian ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili wrote on his Facebook page that he returned to his homeland eight years later. However, in the evening, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that Saakashvili had been detained by law enforcement officers in Georgia and had already been taken to a penitentiary institution.

Later, the Office of the President of Ukraine said that they regard the detention of Mikheil Saakashvili in Tbilisi as revenge against him.

Saakashvili was the president of Georgia for two terms. In 2013, when his party lost, and his second term finished, Saakashvili left the country and never returned. He lived in Europe, the US, and Ukraine.

As of now, Saakashvili does not have the citizenship of Georgia as he was deprived of it after ge did not process the dual citizenship during the obtaining of Ukrainian citizenship.
