The European Union has stated that the decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine (CCU), which blocks the implementation of the results of local elections, may be considered as a reason for temporary suspension of the visa-free regime. This was stated by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the EU Mykola Tochytskyi in his letter to the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna, Yevropeiska Pravda reports.
"As our contacts unofficially point out, the decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine №13-r/ 2020, which abolished the key anti-corruption powers of the NACP and criminal liability for false declarations, may force the European Commission to launch a mechanism set to temporarily suspend visa-free travel with the country," reads the message.
Visa-free travel may be suspended due to the withdrawal of the third country from the criteria as a result of which the visa-free regime was introduced.
The European Union has advised to set up a high-level working group to draft amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine as soon as possible.
As we reported earlier, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine has recently blocked the implementation of local election results.
It also recognized the criminal responsibility for a false declaration as such that does not correspond to the Main law of Ukraine.
