Earlier, Ambassadors of the EU member countries gave green light to the fifth package of sanctions against Belarus. These include economic restrictions against 17 people and 11 organizations.

In response, the Belarusian authorities have introduced a food embargo on goods from "countries, pursuing a discriminatory policy and unfriendly acts" against Minsk. The ban on the imports of "a wide list of goods" produced in these states has come into force on January 1, 2022. The embargo applies to a number of goods from the European Union, as well as the United States, Canada, Norway, Albania, Iceland, Northern Macedonia, the United Kingdom, Montenegro and Switzerland.
