The situation in Afghanistan demonstrates the need for a quick revision of EU rules on migration and asylum. This was written by the Deputy Chairman of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas in his microblog on Twitter.
“The situation in Afghanistan and the actions of Belarus have shown that the time when we can wait for a complete revision of the rules of migration and asylum in Europe that we need has already expired,” a high-ranking European official wrote.
The Taliban militants have seized Afghanistan. At the same time, residents of Kabul began to leave the city en masse. This happened after the United States withdrew its troops from the country.
By "actions of Belarus" is meant the migrant crisis on the border with Lithuania. In 2021, Lithuanian border guards detained more than 2 000 illegal migrants at the border with Belarus. On July 2, the Lithuanian government declared a state of emergency at the national level in connection with an increase in the flow of illegal migrants from Belarus.
