The European Union intends to soon expand sanctions list against Syrian individuals and entities because of military action in the city of Aleppo. This is reported in the statement of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
The EU will introduce punitive measures as long as the repression continues in Syria, said in a statement. High Representative recalled the need to ensure the safety of the civilian population and objects of special protection under international humanitarian law.
"Since the beginning of the onset of the Syrian regime and its allies, primarily Russia, the intensity and scale of the bombing of the eastern Aleppo have caused numerous victims among civilians and devastated large areas of the city", - quotes the statement DW.
This resulted in a "terrible deterioration", stressed Mogherini.
According to her, the blockade of settlements as a tactic of war, famine and forced displacement are clear violations of international humanitarian law and must stop immediately. EU calls on Russia to use its influence to achieve the softening of the dire situation prevailing in the city.
