EU High Representative for Security Affairs Josep Borrell shared his negative view of the U.S. sanctions spreading on European companies, which were imposed agaist the construction of Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The diplomat said so during his ongoing visit in Russia on February 4, as Interfax quoted him.
"It is obvious that the EU stands against sanctions of third countries against European companies, which perform legal actions. Nord Stream 2 is not the general European project. The decision about construction of this pipeline should be made by EU member countries, which participate in the project", he said.
According to him, the European Commission insists that the pipeline meets the respective EU legal framework.
As for the Russian gas, Borrell marked that the EU does not prefer any of kinds of natural gas; as a customer, it is mostly interested in a transparent and well-regulated market - which means both pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas.
According to him, the EU-Russia relations in energy sector should be more concentrated on the energy transition. The idea is to refuse from the fossil energy sources in the context of fighting the climate changes. The natural gas will play the leading part in this transition.
