The head of EU diplomacy, Federica Mogherini, called important the decision taken on Thursday by the Council of the European Union to strengthen "rapid reaction instruments, including combat units" of the European Union. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs at a press conference in Brussels after the EU Council meeting, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
"These means have existed for ten years, they have never been unfolded, and this is mainly due to the difficulties associated with the financial mechanism. The Council decided to overcome these difficulties," Mogherini said.
According to her, over the coming months this mechanism will be revised to provide funding that allows the deployment of these forces.
"The decision is made. Of course, the situation will not change from day to day, it will take some time, I think it's about several months, because it's difficult," she said.
The head of the EU diplomacy specified that the relevant working groups will be reconsidering the financing at the technical level. At the political level, this is not a topic to discuss for the heads of state or government at the June EU summit. The main political guidance has already been formulated on Thursday by the defense ministers. It is about the joint financing of units.
