The decision to extend EU economic sectoral sanctions against Russia until January 31, 2018, came into force. It is reported in the resolution published in the Official EU Journal on June 29.

This decision is made by the European Union in the written procedure after the recommendations of the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and the President of France Emmanuel Macron. The duration of the tough sectoral sanctions imposed by EU against Russia expires in July.

The USA, EU and other western countries imposed the sanctions against Russia in several stages. Firstly, due to the annexation of Crimea and then due to the Kremlin aggression and stirring of the armed conflict in Donbas by Russia.

The President of the European Council Donald Tusk reported that EU leaders agreed to extend the economic sanctions against Russia due to the nonfulfillment of the Minsk Agreements at the summit in Brussels on June 22.
