European Council President Charles Michel is convening an emergency summit of EU heads of states and governments next Thursday, October 29, due to the spread of Covid-19. The politician announced this on Twitter.
"Inviting leaders for an informal video conference on 29 October 2020 on COVID-19. We need to strengthen our collective effort to fight COVID-19," reads the message.
As we reported earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the coronavirus pandemic will cause the increase in the number of poor people by about 115 million.
"Recent estimates show the pandemic could push up to 115 million people into poverty this year – the first increase in decades. Women are at greatest risk because they are more likely to lose their jobs, and less likely to have social protection," he said.
As the pandemic demands strong collective action, he called for world governments to accelerate economic transformation by investing in a sustainable recovery.
As of now, over 41 million cases were observed worldwide.
