The EU, along with Germany, condemned US sanctions against companies laying the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. It is reported by RFI.
"The EU is opposed to the imposition of sanctions against EU companies conducting legitimate business," said a spokesman for the European Union.
The sanctions bill was signed by US President Donald Trump. Restrictive measures are aimed at companies that are building the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline worth about 10 billion euros along the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
The project aims to double the supply of Russian natural gas to Germany, but US lawmakers are warning that Nord Stream 2 will enrich the Russian government and significantly increase the influence of President Vladimir Putin in times of tension throughout the continent.
The European Commission is currently analyzing the possible impact of US sanctions.
"The goal of the Commission has always been to ensure that Nord Stream 2 operates transparently and non-discriminatoryly with an appropriate degree of oversight by regulatory authorities," said a representative of the European Union.

The spokeswoman noted that the EU gas rules, which entered into force in May, were recognized by the United States.

The government of German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned these measures, urging the United States not to interfere in European energy policy.

“They affect German and other European enterprises, and we see this step as interference in our internal affairs,” a government spokeswoman said.
