EU comments on U.S. withdrawal from Arms Trade Treaty

The European Union reacts negatively on the decision of the U.S. to leave the Arms Trade Treaty. Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Maja Kocijancic stated this.

“A decision by the US to revoke its signature would not contribute to the ongoing efforts to encourage transparency in the international arms trade, to prevent illicit trafficking and to combat the diversion of conventional arms,” the report said.

According to Kocijancic, the EU continues to support the Arms Trade Treaty and believes that it is a main multilateral instrument that aims to strengthen responsibility and transparency in the international arms trade and prevent and eradicate illicit trade. Thus it aims at contributing to international efforts to ensure peace, security, and stability.

Besides, the report emphasizes that this treaty intends to prevent and eliminate the illegal trading of arms that fosters the international afford to secure peace and stability.

The EU will continue to call on all States, and in particular, the major arms exporters and importers, to join the Arms Trade Treaty.

Earlier, President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. leaves the international arms treaty. Trump said this while delivering speech to the National Rifle Association of the USA in Indianapolis.
