The ambassadors of EU member countries approved the extension of economic sanctions against Russia for another six months. Rikard Jozwiak, the reporter of Radio Liberty tweeted this on Monday afternoon.

Previously, Donald Tusk, the leader of the European Council confirmed that the EU made an official decision to extend the economic sanctions against Russia because of the zero progress in the implementation of Misnk agreements.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed that her government would speak for the extension of sanctions against Russia at the EU summit. German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed this in Bundestag, answering the questions of parliamentarians, TASS reports.

‘We will call a spade a spade. We will speak for the prolongation of the sanctions,’ Merkel said.

She has also expressed concern about the Russian actions.

‘We will reject actual claims (of Russia, - in the Sea of Azov,’ the Chancellor added.

Earlier, US State Department spokesman Heather Nauert urged Europe to do more to support Ukraine and fully impose sanctions against Russia. The State Department also said that they condemned the Russian attack on Ukrainian sailors in the Sea of Azov. Donald Trump had intended to meet with Putin in Argentina at the G20 Summit, but decided to cancel the meeting due to the Russian aggression in the Sea of Azov.

On December 12, the European Parliament passed the document, which foresaw the increase of sanctions pressure on Russia unless the Ukrainian sailors are released.
