Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Estonia summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation due to his attempts to justify the Soviet occupation of this country in the 1940s-late 1980s.

ERR reports that the diplomat was trying to pose the occupation and annexation of Estonia by the USSR as a legal move.

Over the last few days, Russian embassy published a number of records on its accounts in social networks, distorting the historical truth. On Wednesday evening, Russian Foreign Ministry claimed that the June coup and the following events took place as voluntary and non-violent, without any reminiscences of repressions that took place during the occupation.

According to Urmas Reinsalu, the Foreign Minister, his country decisively condemns any attempts to falsify history.

"Russia tries to create an image of legitimacy being born from an armed threat, and repressions under mutual agreement are extremely cynical", the Minister said.

"We summoned the ambassador of Russia today, as we mark the 80th anniversary of the Wells declaration - the document that became the basis for the policy of non-recognition that lasted during the entire period of occupation, and it clearly shows that already in 1940, a free world considered the actions of the USSR as an illegal annexation with the use of force", the Minister said.

Estonian Foreign Ministry claimed that during the Second World War and the occupation, Estonia lost a quarter of its population; these are those who perished during the war, the deported, the executed, and those who escaped from the occupied country. The authority claimed that the Soviet occupation resulted in tough democratic, environmental, economic and cultural consequences.
