On the anniversary of the coup, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara can reintroduce the death penalty and promised that immediately after that the "heads of traitors" will be first, reports AFP.
According to the report, Erdogan made such a statement on Saturday evening, delivering a speech in Istanbul in front of thousands of people on the anniversary of an attempted military coup in the country.
"First of all, we will cut off the heads of these traitors," he said, and the crowd supported the imposition of the death penalty.
Erdogan promised to sign any bill that the parliament will approve for the restoration of the death penalty, reports DW.
"We are the state where the rule of law is a priority. If the bill comes to me after the parliament, I will sign it," he stressed.
Let us note that the imposition of the death penalty will put an end to Ankara's ambitions regarding EU membership.
