President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Saturday that his country has started a “serious” operation in Idlib, province of Syria, according to the Associated Press.

The operation is carried out with a part of Syrian oppositional forces which Turkey supports. Erdogan pointed out the Turkish military is not in the province – yet.

The ultimate aim of the operation is to defeat al-Qaida in the province, but it could turn into a costly  and expensive war: the group estimates thousands of fighters and has support among locals, unlike the Islamic State group.
