The European Court of Human Rights (the ECHR) has registered the complaint of Russia against Ukraine as the court’s communiqué states.

“On 22 July 2021 the Government of Russia lodged an inter-State application against Ukraine under Article 33 (Inter-State cases) of the European Convention on Human Rights. This is the first inter-State application lodged by Russia. It has been registered under application no. 36958/21,” the message says.

On July 22, Russia appealed to the ECHR with a complaint against Ukraine. It is the first time ever when Russia files an interstate complaint to the ECHR. In the complaint, the Russian side provides claims to Ukraine due to the death of people during Euromaidan in 2014, suppression of freedom of speech and persecution of dissentients, including politicians and journalists, as well as  blockade of Crimea.

The adviser to the head of the President's Office Mykhailo Podolyak commented on Russia's complaint against Ukraine to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). He considered the complaint as a "cynical propaganda noise", that is legally futile.
