The possibility of restoring direct gas supplies from Russia is directly related to Gazprom paying debts to Ukraine, which is foreseen by the decision of Stockholm arbitrary court. Oleksiy Orzhel, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine said so during the briefing, which he held jointly with Naftogaz-Ukraine company. Interfax-Ukraine quoted him as saying.
According to the official, Russia insists on making the 'package' deal with Ukraine, which includes both gas transit to the EU and direct supplies of the fuel to Ukraine.
If the extension of the gas transit mechanism is related to supplies, the Ukrainian side connects the supplies with compensation of debts, Orzhel said.
As is known, Naftogaz previously said it was ready to consider the offer of gas supplies to Ukraine in lieu of Gazprom's debt to Ukraine.
Prior to that, Russia's energy monopolist Gazprom sent NJSC Naftogaz an official offer to extend the acting contract or to make a new deal on the gas transit over the territory of Ukraine for one year. Gazprom's offer stated that the necessary conditions for that would be a mutual refusal from any claims in the international arbitrary court.
