FBI Director Christopher Wray is being asked to open a criminal probe into U.S. President Donald Trump after a leaked phone call between him and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger showcased Trump's demand to overturn the state's election, NBC News reports.
"As members of Congress and former prosecutors, we believe Donald Trump engaged in solicitation of, or conspiracy to commit, a number of election crimes," Reps. Ted Lieu of California and Kathleen Rice of New York wrote in a joint letter to the FBI head.
As we reported earlier, the telephone conversation between the two politicians was published by The Washington Post.
“All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state," Trump stated.
Raffensperger, in turn, noted: “President Trump, we have had several lawsuits, and we have had to respond in court to the lawsuits and the contentions. We do not agree that you have won."
It is worth noting that the President-elect Joe Biden won the election in Georgia by an 11,779 margin.
