The European Parliament chose the new Speaker. Italian socialist David Sassoli will be chairing the EU institution for the next two and a half years, Reuters reports.
63-year old Sassoli won after two rounds of elections at the first plenary session of the Assembly, which took place after the European Parliament elections in May.
The politician and a former journalist, Sassoli has also been serving as the EU lawmaker for over a decade.
July 2, the new convocation of the European Parliament started working.
Previously, Polskie Radio reported that the most likely candidate to lead the European Commission would be Dutch left-centrist politician Frans Timmermans; currently, he is the First Vice-President of the Commission.
