CSTO contingent withdrawal starts in Almaty

The withdrawal of the contingent of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) started in Almaty, Kazakhstan as reported.

The process of withdrawal of CSTO troops from Kazakhstan will not last more than 10 days.

The ceremony takes place at the Land Forces Military University named after Sagadat Nurmagambetov.

In the beginning of 2022 protests erupted in Kazakhstan after the increase in the price of liquefied gas. Demonstrators announced an indefinite action. Demands to reduce the price of gas have grown into calls for the resignation of the president and government. The Internet has been shut down in the country, law enforcement agencies seized military equipment, make arrests. Kazakh TV channels suspended broadcasting.

After a couple of days of anti-government protests, the Cabinet of Kazakhstan has filed a resignation letter, and President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev accepted it.

On January 5, a state of emergency was declared all over Kazakhstan amid massive fuel price protests.

Besides, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which includes six post-Soviet states, has approved the deployment of troops into Kazakhstan, where mass protests accompanied by riots are currently taking place. Already 2,500 military personnel from CSTO countries have arrived in Kazakhstan.

An anti-terrorist operation is under way, and authorities say they have all government facilities under control. President Tokayev has authorized the security forces to open fire on "criminals" without warning.
