Arrested on the charge of state treason citizen of Crimea Ivan Yatskin asked President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to include him on the exchange list, as Interfax-Ukraine reported citing his lawyer Nikolai Polozov.
“Yatskin wrote the letter to the president of Ukraine with a request to include him in the exchange list and pass it to me. I arrived in Kyiv and today I filed this statement to the Office of the President,” he said.
The lawyer specified that a similar statement will be passed to Ukraine Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmyla Denisova.
According to Polozov, the issue of the prisoner swap is discussed by the leadership of Ukraine and Russia. However, the lawyer specified, it is still unknown who is included on the list.
Yatskin is kept in the Lefortovo remand center. He was detained in Crimea in the mid-October 2019 and transferred to Moscow.
He is charged with state treason in the form of espionage. He faces 12-20 years of imprisonment. He does not plead guilty.
According to the lawyer, his client has two citizenships – Russian and Ukrainian. According to the prosecutors, Yatskin gathered information, which makes the state secret of Russia and passed it to the authorities of Ukraine.
Earlier, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vadym Prystaiko stated about the preparation of the prisoner swap between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. He specified that the exchange may take place in ‘all for all’ format.
