The US Special Envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker claimed that the recognition of action of Russia in Crimea and the East of Ukraine is out of the question. He said this at the interview to the TV Channel Nastoyashee Vremya.
According to him, the issue of Crimea is not different in any way from the issue of the Eastern part of Ukraine or Donbas issue.
‘This territory that was captured and occupied and in Crimea case, Russia also claimed that it annexed this territory. It is unacceptable; you cannot just come and capture the part of the foreign country. This is why there can be no recognition, no legitimacy for Russia steps in the Eastern Ukraine and Crimea’, Volker emphasized. ‘Every time when the Russians come and say ‘Remove the sanctions! Remove the sanctions!’, we know that there is the reason why they say this because it is important for Russia. And if the existing sanctions are not effective then it is not the reason to change the course line, it is the reason to think that what we can do to reach the point when we will be able to solve everything’, Volker claimed, pointing at the necessity to consistently implement the sanctions to settle the conflict in the East of Ukraine.
The former US Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker was appointed at the position of the Special Envoy on July 7. He reported that the US is actively considering the issue of provision of Ukraine with arms to help it with the fight against the Russia-backed militants in Donbas. He noted that he does not consider such step as provocative and this decision will help to change the approach of Moscow.
