Ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych

Kyiv Court of Appeal reaffirmed the sentence about the arrest of Viktor Yanukovych in absentia. The judicial authority looked into the case of high treason, in which former president of Ukraine is a convict. The verdict was announced on March 25, Interfax reports.

The complaint of Yanukovych's defense team was dismissed, and the restriction measure for Yanukovych remained unchanged. The full text of the verdict will be made public on March 30.

Yanukovych's defense team claimed that the investigation allowed violations of procedure; besides, it said that there were no documents about Yanukovych being on the international wanted list.

The prosecution, in turn, stated that there were no procedural infringements during the investigation. "Yanukovych is among the wanted individuals... there's a task order from the SBU provided by an investigator. There are letters confirming the fact of international search", the prosecution team said.

The judges consider Yanukovych guilty of state treason and assistance in waging aggressive war against Ukraine. The ex-President fled the country in February 2014, during the Revolution of Dignity.
