Ukraine verifies information regarding capture of Ukrainians by pirates in Benin

The Ukrainian Consul verifies the information about the presence of Ukrainians among the captured sailors of the cargo vessel in Benin. Vasyl Kyrylych, the official representative of the Department of Consular office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported this, as quoted by Interfax-Ukraine. 

‘The Consul is establishing all circumstances of this issue,’ he noted. 

Earlier, the pirates assaulted the MSC MANDY vessel off Benin coast with 24 crew members  aboard. It is assumed that there is a Ukrainian citizen among the 24.

As of now, the vessel went on the raid of Lagos port (territorial waters of Nigeria). The pirates abandoned the vessel two hours after the attack; however, they took six hostages along with the loot.  

On January 5, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin reported that two Ukrainian sailors had been released from the captivity of pirates and they would be home soon.
