On June 24, a grand military parade was held on Red Square in Moscow. The audience was surprised by a large number of the latest samples of air and ground equipment. But the main attention was focused on the S-350 Vityaz anti-aircraft missile system, which first entered the cobblestones of Red Square. It took 28 years to develop this type of weapon in Russia. Its appearance will make it possible to move to a new technological level. The S-350, like its predecessor, the S-300, has unique characteristics that have become the focus of close attention of the whole world.
New generation with improved performance
As the threat of American cruise and ballistic missiles and bombers was counteracted over the past century, the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system began to become obsolete, in connection with which Russia decided to create a high-performance advanced air defense system. As a result, after many years of development, the new S-350 complex was born. Vityaz has won the favor of the Russian military due to its superior performance.
The system should gradually replace the existing S-300 anti-aircraft missile system, which will increase the efficiency of intercepting cruise missiles up to 2.5 times. This new medium and short-range anti-aircraft missile system was developed by the well-known Russian military-space defense concern Almaz-Antey.
On December 22 of last year, the enterprise delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defense the first set of the new Vityaz S-350 long-range anti-aircraft missile system. During delivery, the system with high accuracy destroyed several flying targets in range and successfully passed acceptance tests.
Compared to the S-300, the S-350 is not only cheaper, but also has improved performance, and also has a higher level of informatization and degree of maneuverability. The S-300 launcher is equipped with only four launchers, while the S-350 has 12 launchers. In addition, the S-350 can carry out mixed loading of missiles, including medium-range missiles that the S-400 and Buk-M1-2 systems are equipped with, as well as other models of short-range guided missiles. The maximum range of the complex is 60-120 km, and the maximum firing height is 30 km. Thus, it can effectively attack and intercept various types of maneuvering targets and ballistic missiles.
The S-350 anti-aircraft missile system consists of three mobile modules on wheeled chassis - a combat control station designed to collect real-time air traffic information, two multidisciplinary radar stations, and self-propelled launchers. Long-range radar is used to search and identify rocket and aerodynamic targets.
The process of warfare of the air defense system is controlled by an electronic system, so operators can only monitor the situation and, if necessary, make adjustments. Bringing the system into combat readiness after a long march takes about five minutes. The previous generations of the S-300, S-400, and S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems available to the Russian army have a radius of destruction of more than 150 km, but they are not very effective for operating in a radius of 50 km to 100 km.
The S-350 complex is a modernized version of the S-300PS, which has a higher level of informatization and increased firepower, due to which it can cover the missing range of distances from 50 km to 100 km.
In the event of a large-scale war in the future, preference will be given to the cheaper and more advanced S-350 system. According to the plan for the deployment of Russian air defense forces, one S-350 air defense battalion in combination with the Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile and the gun system will be enough to withstand the attack of the aviation brigade, so the S-350 has greater strategic value than the S-300.
Multilevel air defense system
The Russian integrated air defense and missile defense system is a comprehensive system consisting of various types of armaments of air defense and missile defense of long, medium, small and ultra-small ranges. Being the basis of the ground-level echelon of the future air defense system, the S-350 fits well with the Pantsir series anti-aircraft missile and cannon systems and the new generation S-400 and S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems, forming a scientifically based air defense combat system. The Nudol and S-500 anti-aircraft missile systems are used to destroy high-altitude targets at long distances, the S-400 and S-350 are designed to work at medium and long distances, and the Buk, Carapace, and Tor are used to protect near zone.
The inclusion of the S-350 complex in this system would not only replace the S-300 but also to strengthen the medium-range anti-aircraft missile systems and fill the shortage of medium and short-range air defense systems. In addition, the combination of the S-350 and S-400 will make the medium-range air defense system even more impenetrable and effective in various combat situations.
Deployment of the S-350 is deeper
Earlier, the United States has steadily withdrawn from the Intermediate-Range Short-Range Missile Treaty and the Open Skies Treaty, and are also considering extending the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and declaring their withdrawal from the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Reduction Treaty. After that, despite the difficult epidemic situation in the country, the United States and NATO continue to build up their military infrastructure near the borders of Russia for military deterrence and provocation.
These actions threaten the security of Russia, so it was forced to openly demonstrate its missile and air defense forces. The S-350 anti-aircraft missile system, which has high expectations, is less in weight and requires less transportation and deployment costs than the S-400. In addition, it can make up for the shortcomings of the S-300 system in confronting the NATO Air Force.
Vityaz is capable of not only quickly deploying on the entire front line but also moving to more important sectors in order to strengthen air defense forces and attack the enemy. Immediately after the parade on Red Square, this complex will go into service with the Russian army to strengthen the country's position in a strategic confrontation with the United States and a global military confrontation.
It can be predicted that after the successful deployment of the S-350, due to its high combat effectiveness, on the one hand, the Russian army will be able to significantly expand the range of its ground-based anti-ballistic and anti-aircraft defense system. On the other hand, it only takes 20 minutes for an intercontinental missile to fly from the US through the Arctic to the Urals and Siberia in Russia, while NATO deployed powerful air forces near the northwestern borders of Russia.
The deployment of the S-350 will further strengthen the Russian air defense forces in the Arctic and strengthen Russia's control over the region and the northern sea route. Thus, it is of great importance for breaking through the strategic environment of the United States and NATO.
Vityaz still needs real combat tests, but its significance and the scientifically substantiated possibility of incorporating missile defense and air defense systems into the layered system are obvious. Due to the high degree of maneuverability and the ability to transport over long distances, the S-350 anti-aircraft missile system will be able to quickly go into combat position and provide support to others with defense equipment, as well as protect several military objects from enemy attacks at once.
Thus, it will be able to strengthen the coverage of the ground-based missile and air defense system of Russia, as well as become an important deterrent in the confrontation with NATO.
