According to the BBC, 70 MPs voted for the independence, 10 voted in the negative and two abstained. Also, the supporters of the independence gathered near the regional parliament.
The referendum on the independence took place in Catalonia on October 1. According to the results, 90.18% voted for independence with 43% turnout.
King of Spain did not recognize the referendum on independence, and the Catalan leader accused the King of Spain of "ignoring millions." Later, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that his government could use constitutional powers to end the autonomy of Catalonia to prevent the region from seceding from Spain.
The Head of the European Parliament believes that the EU countries won’t recognize the referendum and Catalonia’s attempts to declare independence, so the region should abstain from trying.
