According to Browder, Russia constantly uses Interpol to its advantage. At the same time, there is a point in the constitution of this international organization, which allows to exclude the countries, which uses it in their advantage from the membership.
“This point was never used. However, now the Canadian Parliament and the Canadian government should lead right now on suspending Russia from the Interpol system, in the same way as Russia was suspended from the Olympics after getting caught cheating,” Browder reminded.
He emphasized that Interpol “should not be a weapon of the dictatorship.”
Browder, the Head of Investment Fund Hermitage Capital Management dedicated the biggest part of his life for the disclosure of the corruption inside Kremlin and revenge for the death of fund’s lawyer Sergey Magnitsky.
On November 21, Kim Jong-yang, a high-rank police officer of Korean origin has been elected as the new chief of Interpol.
Previously, Interpol had to re-elect the chairman after the-then chief Meng Hongwei went missing. Later, it was reported that China conducted an investigation into a corruption case where Meng was involved.
Aleksandr Prokopchuk, Major General of the Russian police was a favorite of the elections. In 2006 - 2011, he served as deputy head of the National Central Bureau of Interpol of Russia’s Internal Ministry. Then, he became the head of this organization. In 2016, the Major General became the Vice-President of Interpol.
Ukraine's Interior Minister and the Ukrainian delegation in Interpol decisively condemned Prokopchuk's possible election into this office; the Ukrainian side insisted that the Interpol might end up as a tool in the hands of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
