Josep Borrell is to assume the office of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The Spanish official who is the incumbent Spanish foreign minister and ex-Speaker of the European Parliament will replace Federica Mogherini. Ursula von der Leien, the future president of the European Commission said so presenting the new Commission members; Yevropeiska Pravda quoted her as saying.
In May 2019, Borrell gave an interview to the Spanish press, saying he considered Russia an "old adversary of Spain that once again makes a statement".
The Spanish-Argentinian politician, a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), Borrell serves as Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Government of Spain since 2018. In 2010, he chaired the Institute of the European University.
On 2 July 2019, President of the European Council Donald Tusk announced that the European Council would nominate Josep Borrell as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
