The U.S. could return to the Council as observer

The White House is preparing to resume cooperation with the OHCHR, the UN Office for Human Rights. Reuters reports that with the reference to a high-rank member of Department of the State. 

Secretary of the State Anthony Blinken plans to announce that the U.S. returns to the Council as an observer.

"We intend to do so knowing that the most effective way to reform and improve the Council is to engage with it in a principled fashion", the official said.

President Joe Biden's administration believes that the OHCHR must be reformed, and the most effective way to make it happen is to cooperate with it, abiding by the principles. According to one of the sources, the OHCHR is a "an important forum for those fighting tyranny and injustice around the world".

Donald Trump, Biden's predecessor decided to leave the OHCHR in 2018. 

The next session of the UN authority is supposed to kick off in Geneva this month.
