White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Biden “also looks forward to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Iraq on political, economic and security issues to include joint efforts to ensure the enduring defeat” of the Islamic State militant group.
The meeting set for July 26 comes at a pivotal point in the US-Iraq relationship, and amid growing concerns about more frequent attacks against US troops in Iraq and Syria.
As we reported earlier, on July 5, US forces shot down an armed drone above their embassy in Baghdad.
“American defence systems fired rockets into the air in Baghdad, according to AFP reporters, with Iraqi security sources saying the salvos took out a drone that was laden with explosives,” reads the message.
According to Voice of America, the attack took place at 14:45. The scale of the damage is still being estimated; no information about the victims is provided. The responsibility for the attack has not been claimed yet.
