U.S. President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin are speaking over a secure video call on Tuesday in what is expected to be a highly consequential meeting for the two leaders amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine. CNN reported this.
The meeting began shortly after 17 p.m. Kyiv time, according to the White House.
The White House noted that the topic of Ukraine will be one of the central issues in the talks between the presidents of the United States and Russia.
It was also reported that the leaders intend to discuss strategic stability between the countries, as well as cyber and regional issues.
It should be noted that on the eve of this meeting, the US President made a number of calls. In particular, Biden held talks with NATO allies and leaders of several countries.
Earlier, on December 6, it became known that the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a telephone conversation with the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. The conversation took place before talks between American and Russian leaders Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky commented on the conversation with the White House representative as follows:
"We agreed on our positions with Anthony Blinken before Biden and Putin talked. We agreed to continue working together and in coordination. I am grateful to our strategic partner and ally, the United States, for its continued support for our sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine."
It is noted that after the summit of the presidents of Russia and the United States Joe Biden intends to talk to the Ukrainian president to inform about the results of the meeting.
It should be added that the summit of Putin and Biden is taking place against the background of aggravation of the situation near the Ukrainian border.
Earlier it was reported that on the border of Ukraine with Russia and on the territory of occupied Donbas there are 94.300 Russian military personnel, who can be used for escalation.
Russian investigative group Conflict Intelligence Team reported that Russia continues to transport military equipment to the border with Ukraine.
Earlier, Anthony Blinken suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin was ready to invade Ukraine. At the moment, it is not yet known whether he made a decision.
