Annalena Baerbock, co-chairman of the Green Party in Germany accuses Russia of the gas blackmail that led to soaring prices on energy carriers in Europe. Reuters cited her interview for Funke newspaper released on Wednesday.
"We can see a poker play by Russia. We hear that gas deliveries are being cut... We must not let ourselves be blackmailed," she said.
According to the official, Moscow is trying to blackmail Berlin to get the Nord Stream 2 launched.
Baerbock added that now it is important to provide living up to the rules of the EU. According to these, operators of gas pipelines should not be gas producers that they transport. However, Gazprom, the Russian gas monopolist actually owns the Nord Stream 2 and produces the gas that will be transported via this pipeline. If the situation remains, it will take an exclusion to get the pipeline working.
"This could be used by Russia to force a quick authorization of Nord Stream 2, even if all the legal boxes haven't been ticked," she added.
