The Belgian Minister for Immigration Theo Francken said that his country could grant political asylum to the Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who was ousted by Madrid. This is reported by El Punt Avui.
According to the minister, Puigdemont may not receive a "fair trial" if he is detained in Spain. Francken also noted that granting political asylum is not unrealistic, since Belgium is one of the few countries in the European Union that can provide asylum to block citizens.
"It is clear that this will put us in a difficult diplomatic situation with the Spanish government," admitted Francken.
"But according to the law, you can apply for asylum in Belgium. The request, like other applications, will be considered objectively, correctly and independently," he added.
