F-16s of the Belgian Air Forces scrambled to intercept the Russian Sukhoi Su-27s; the incident with Russian fighters entering the airspace over Baltic Sea occurred on Thursday. The respective message appeared on the Twitter page of Belgian Defence Ministry.
No information about the actual area of interception, or the number of aircraft on any of the sides was disclosed.
It's the third time this week with the Russian and Belgian planes involved in this area. On November 22, Russian Su-24 frontline bombers hovered over two Belgian Navy frigates, performing maneuvers on the dangerously close distance. The Belgian vessels were involved in NATO maritime drills at the time. Besides, a Russian submarine took up not far from one of the Belgian frigates; the Russian vessel did not take any aggressive actions, but the crew took photos of the Belgian ships.
