The Defense Ministry of Belarus confirms that the response of the armed forces on the possible disruption of the situation will be perfected within the West-2017 drills and the brouhaha round about the drills in the neighboring countries is incomprehensible. The Head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus Oleg Belokonev claimed this as BELTA reported.
According to him, Belarus wants to prepare for the possible activity of the illegal armed formations near its borders that threaten the Common State. In turn, Russia supports Belarus by the participation in the drills.
‘According to the events that take place in the Middle Eastern countries, one of the similar variants of the appearance of the crisis situation and conflict escalation connected with the increase of the activity of the illegal armed formations, international separatist and terrorist organizations that have the external support is taken as the basis of the plan. Belarus aims to not allow the unleashing of the armed conflict, disruption of the situation in the region and Russia gives political, financial, military and technical support to Belarus according to the acting regulatory basis’, he claimed.
Belokonev also added that the forthcoming drills possess the defensive nature and the brouhaha round about the drills is incomprehensible. Moreover, Belarus informed the countries-members of the Vienna Document about the holding of the drills beforehand.
‘Belarus rigorously fulfills the undertaken commitments on the international and regional agreements on the disarmament, strengthening of the confidence-building and security measures in the UN and the OSCE. The country officially informed the co countries-members of the Vienna Document about the forthcoming West-2017 drills in accordance with the commitments’, he added.
Earlier, the Defense Ministry of Poland claimed that part of the Russian military contingent can be left at the territory of Belarus after the end of the West-2017 drills.
The joint drills of Russia and Belarus West-2017 are planned for September. The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Olexandr Turchynov claimed that the joint drills can be the preparation for the offensive operation. The President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko assured the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that West-2017 will not become the preparation for invasion to Ukraine.
The Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov claimed that Russia has no intention to occupy Belarus under pretence of drills holding.
Earlier it was reported that two Ukrainian representatives and observers from NATO will also observe the exercises at the invitation of Minsk.
