Belarus to close consulate in New York

The consulate of Belarus in New York will be closed on October 21 at the request of the United States as the Foreign Ministry of Belarus reported.

"At the request of the US authorities, the Consulate General of the Republic of Belarus in New York was forced to cease its work on October 21, 2021," the message says.

It is noted that citizens of Belarus residing in the territory of the corresponding consular district, which includes Canada, will have to apply for services to the Belarusian embassy in Washington. Citizens of Belarus who are permanently registered at the Consulate General will be transferred to permanent consular registration at the Embassy of Belarus in the United States from November 1, 2021.

The consulate has already stopped answering phone calls, accepting and processing documents sent by mail as Voice of America reports.

Documents received after October 8 will be forwarded to the embassy. The access to the consulate will be terminated after October 15.

From October 17, American citizens must obtain a visa to enter Belarus.

These steps came after the regime of the authoritarian Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko in August, in response to new US sanctions, demanded that Washington reduces the staff of its embassy in Minsk to five by September 1.

As we reported, the MEPs are preparing to increase pressure for an international trial of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, who is accused of involvement in mass torture and repression.
