The data shows that there are 345 prisoners per 100,000 residents of this country. Turkey and Russia are in the top three with the largest number of inmates. In Poland, for example, the number is almost twice smaller than in Belarus.
The smallest number of prisoners is observed in Iceland, Norway, San-Marino and Monaco.
After last year's demonstrations against tapmering with the results of presidential election, dozens of thousands of people were arrested in Belarus. Several thousand were sentenced to imprisonment in high-security penal colonies. Some 500 inmates are considered political prisoners.
