Viktor Medvedchuk, Head of Political Council of Opposition Platform - For Life party commented on the initiative of the National Council for TV and Radio Broadcasting; earlier, this authority decided that NewsOne TV channel's license would be canceled if there were any signs of illegal actions tied to this channel's work.
According to Medvedchuk, the Council and the new Ukrainian authorities are eager to set the dictatorship for the media.
"Today, we heard that one needs to change the law and give the Council the authority to bring TV channels and other media to responsibility, strip them off licenses. This only means it is a power grab by this or that state authority; it is setting the dictatorship; and, most important, it will tame your TV channel (112 TV channel), NewsOne and many other channels", he said during the evening show at 112 Ukraine TV channel.
"You all are well aware of the practice that took place over many years... The SBU statement, the Prosecutor General's statement, and his actions aimed at initiating the criminal case for certain trumped-up reasons... these are the parts of the same chain; the government has been trying to control the media trying to counteract the dissidents... You can't assess it otherwise", Medvedchuk said.
Earlier, Taras Kozak, the MP from Opposition Platform - For Life party released a statement, blaming Lutsenko. He said Lutsenko's words were "cynical lies".
"Statement of Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yury Lutsenko on the tie of NewsOne TV channel with the Russian Promsviazbank is a cynical lie and it shows him being unprofessional and his unsuitability. The ultimate beneficiary and owner of NewsOne TV channel is not any of Cypriot company as it was said by the prosecutor general. I, Taras R. Kozak, is the only owner of NewsOne TV channel and own 100% of the channel directly. Other statements of the prosecutor general, particularly, toward the participation of the TV channel in the terrorist activity, are absolutely groundless. I consider them as the artificial creation of the grounds for imposing sanctions against NewsOne and closure of the channel for political reasons", Kozak's statement reads.
Members of the International Editorial Board of NewsOne TV channel responded to the pressure from the side of the radicals on the workers of the channel.
Previously, NewsOne canceled the telecast with Russia24 TV channel. The media planned the event for July 12; however, the very idea to organize and hold such event evoked a huge public outrage. Protesters came to the channel's building, enraged at the idea of holding dialogue with the Russian state-sponsored medium. As the channel's staff faced multiple threats, the telecast was canceled.
