The situation with attacks on 112 Ukraine TV channel could be the first serious conflict between the free media and the new government in the struggle for freedom of speech in Ukraine. MP Yuriy Pavlenko, the member of Opposition Platform-For Life party said so on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel.

"If they succeed in finishing this special operation against 112 Ukraine TV channel, they'll carry on with shutting down and destroying all other independent media. So today... we'd like to hear the official information [from the government], and we'de better be wrong when saying that the Presidential Office considers such a scenario", he said.

He added that the situation caused both the national and international buzz.

"This is why the government has to react immediately here. It keeps silence, which is the first negative signal. If we add the fact that they've been doing to Committee for the Freedom of Speech, depriving it of the opportunity, for instance, to protect 112 Ukraine TV channel in case this scenario is being implemented - it's the second negative signal sent by the government. It's an indirect signal, but it's powerful enough to see the real tasks that the new government set for itself. As far as I'm concerned, the people who really call the shots and understand what befalls the country in the near future... understand that the level of their knowledge, skills, plans and tools... they are incapable of any positive changes in the near future", he said.

Pavlenko also said that the situation in the country would only get worse, especially in the winter. "It's been a hundred days now and they just played the election game instead of getting ready for the winter or solving other tough questions in the country", the MP stated. "Therefore, they understand that the state of affairs in the country will only get worse. And what do they do in order to stay in power? They take under control all independent media that refuse to jig to their tune or spread the press releases that laud them. So, this particular scenario of taking all independent media under control is quite real, it must be prevented by all means available to the media. Again, it concerns not only 112 Ukraine; it could be a precedent, which will further concern every reporter and every medium that disobeys the Presidential Office's instructions, telling the real truth and expose any actions of the incumbent officials and the new government", Pavlenko said.

Earlier on August 20, numerous Ukrainian media reported that Chief of the President's Office Andriy Bohdan planned to set control over 112 Ukraine TV channel and organize the SBU raid on the channel. The media stated that Bohdan's goal would be to get control over the most popular news channel in Ukraine and pass it to ARMA agency. 112 Ukraine came up with the official statement on this piece of information.
